Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Joseph Degen:

Father Joseph Degen was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Ogdensburg in 1956. He served in multiple parishes throughout his career. According to media reports, the Diocese of Ogdensburg released a list of 28 priests who were credibly accused of sexual misconduct with a minor or a vulnerable adult in November 2018. One priest that was first named publicly for abused was Father Joseph Degen. His last name was shown as “Degen” on the list but has also been listed as “Degan” in the official Catholic Directory.

The Diocese of Ogdensburg did not include the number of alleged victims or the time frame that the alleged abuse occurred. The only information given about Father Degen is that he died before the list was made public.

Diocesan officials had previously said they would not release the names, largely to protect the privacy of victims. Each name on the list has been internally investigated and the Diocesan Review Board found that the allegations were credible.
