Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father David Carrier:

Fr. David Laurian Carrier was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1963, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Los Angeles. According to media reports, he was accused of sexually abusing a high school boy from 1977 to 1979 at St. Anthony Seminary and the Santa Barbara Mission, both in Santa Barbara.

A civil lawsuit was filed in 2006, alleging that Fr. Carrier began assaulting the victim every week in various locations around the Mission, including the Mission pool’s changing room and unused living quarters. The sexual abuse by Fr. Carrier went on for most of the victim’s junior and senior years. The abuse was reported to the Diocese of Fresno in 2004, but nothing was done until the lawsuit was filed two years later.

According to media reports, in May 2012, thousands of confidential religious files documenting sexual abuse among clergy members in the Roman Catholic church were made public. The files of Fr. David Laurian Carrier were among them.

Fr. Carrier was included in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ list of priests accused of sexual misconduct involving minors. He was included in the Franciscan Friars Province of St. Barbara’s List of Franciscan Friars from the St. Barbara Province with Credibly Accused Claims of Sexual Abuse of a Minor, as well as on the Diocese of Stockton’s Revised List in 2020.

Fr. Carrier died in 2000, six years before the lawsuit came to light.
