Fr. Gary Holtey – Diocese of San Diego

Father Gary Holtey

Ordained: 1984

On Leave: 2004

Assigned as Follows:

  • St. Charles Borromeo Church (San Diego, CA)
  • Santa Sophia Catholic Church (Spring Valley, CA)

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Gary Holtey:

Father Gary Michael Holtey was ordained a priest in 1984, who served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of San Diego. According to media reports, he was placed on leave in May 2004 pending an investigation against him for allegedly being involved in an international pornography ring. Police and federal agents searched the offices at St. Charles Borromeo Church, where Holtey was assigned at the time, and seized all of the computers.

Holtey told investigators that he had looked at child porn for years on the Internet and that investigators would find material he had collected in a chest of drawers next to his bed. Holtey pleaded guilty in February 2005, and was charged with 10 misdemeanor counts of possession of child pornography. He only received 3 years of probation and was told to complete a 52-week sex offender treatment program.

In September 2005, a support group of clergy abuse victims sent a letter to Bishop Robert Brom demanding that a priest who pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography be removed from a San Diego neighborhood. Holtey was living unsupervised across the street from St. John's Catholic parish in University Heights. The group also alleged that the diocese failed to remove the 59-year-old from priesthood.

Father Gary Holtey is no longer listed on the Diocesan website and his name has been located on the Maryland Sex Offender Archive, but not found on the National Register.

His current whereabouts are unknown, but it is assumed that he is living somewhere in Maryland.
