Archdiocese of Los Angeles (Extern)
- 1978-1984: St. Basil Catholic Church (Los Angeles, CA)
Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Honorato Caboang:
Fr. Honorato Caboang was an extern priest from the Philippines ordained in 1960, who served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Los Angeles from 1978 to 1984. According to media reports, he was one of the seven priests who were accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl over several years. The girl became pregnant, and Fr. Caboang allegedly conspired with the other priests to keep the assault and pregnancy a secret by sending her to the Philippines where she gave birth and nearly died.
The alleged victim filed a civil lawsuit in 1984, and Fr. Caboang reportedly fled to the Philippines after the lawsuit was filed. Fr. Caboang’s name was included on the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ 2004 list of priests accused of sexual misconduct involving minors. Claims against the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Caboang, and the other six priests settled for $500K as part of a $660M settlement in 2007. Fr. Caboang was reportedly living in the Philippines until he died in 2007.
