Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Msgr. Daniel Murray:
Msgr. Daniel Murray, former vocations director of the Diocese of Orange, was ordained a priest in 1973, who served in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. According to media reports, he was accused of sexual misconduct in 1991. He denied the charges. The Diocese of Orange reported that they were unable to substantiate the claims. In 2003, Fr. Murray was named in a child sexual abuse lawsuit. The suit alleged Monsignor Murray sexually abused one youth from 1973 to 1979. The settlement was kept secret for one year.
In September 2004, a support group for clergy abuse victims sent a letter to a Catholic lay group asking it to declare that the Orange County Bishop violated the U.S. Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in a case involving Monsignor Daniel Murray of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The letter outlined three separate violations of the charter: that Monsignor Murray remained in his post; that the $500,000 settlement was kept secret for almost a year; and that the Diocese of Orange refused to make the case public.
Monsignor Murray was included in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' list of priests accused of sexual misconduct involving minors. According to the Diocese of Orange's list, Murray was laicized in 2019.
