Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Maurice Scheier:

Father Maurice Scheier was ordained a Franciscan religious order priest in 1927, who served in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He worked at St. Bonaventure University for nearly 60 years from 1928 to 1986, including as math department head, dean of science and vicar and guardian of the friary. He was also pastor of Sacred Heart in Knapp Creek from 1961 to 1988.  According to media reports, he was accused by at least one person of child sexual abuse which occurred in 1948. The claim was eventually part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ $660 million settlement to more than 500 alleged abuse victims in 2007.

Father Scheier died in 1991. His name was included in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ list of priests credibly accused of child sexual abuse. His name was added to the Diocese of Buffalo’s list in November 2018. In May 2019, the Santa Barbara Province Franciscans listed his name, but noted the order’s Holy Name Province of the Franciscan Friars in NY “handled the 2004 allegation.”
