Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Brother John Moriarty:
Br. John Moriarty, a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, was accused in a 2003 lawsuit of sexually abusing a 17-year-old boy from 1975-1976 while he was serving at St. Helena retreat house in California. Moriarty was assigned there from 1974-1978. According to media reports, the case was settled for $1.2M, and it was reported a year later that Moriarty was living at Wounded Brothers Project, a treatment center for troubled clergy. During his career, he worked in California, Oregon, and East Africa.
Moriarty was publicly named on the Diocese of Santa Rosa’s 2019 list of clergy credibly accused of childhood sexual abuse. He was also included on the Diocese of Oakland list of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse.
According to media reports, in 2019, a suit was filed by a man claiming abuse in the 1970s as a Moreau Catholic High student in Hayward, California by both Moriarty and principal Rev. Gordon Wilcox.
Moriarty died in 2013.
