Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Brother Marcos Capistran Chavira:
In 2013, Br. Marcos Capistran Chavira was publicly accused of sexually abusing at least one male student from Palma High School in Salinas, California, when working in the Diocese of Monterey in the 1970s and 1980s.
According to media reports, in 2003, nine former students reached a settlement worth $18 million with the Irish Christian Brothers Catholic Order, of which many of the abusers were affiliated. The former governor of California vetoed Senate Bill 131 that no longer allowed individuals to file lawsuits against private institutions that employed their abusers.
In 2019, the Child Victims Act for survivors of childhood sexual assault was passed in California. This Act took effect on January 1st, 2020, giving individuals a 3-year window to come forward and file a civil lawsuit against their abuser.
In 2019, Br. Marcos Capistran Chavira was included on the Monterey Diocese’s list of priests named as being “credibly accused” of child sex abuse. Very little is known of Chavira’s activities within the church as the Diocese of Monterey has not released any information about the year Chavira was ordained nor his assignment history. In addition, information about the age of his alleged victims and the nature of the alleged sexual abuse is unknown.
