Archdiocese of Miami

Removed: 1989

  • Our Lady of Divine Providence (Miami-Dade County, FL)

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Ernesto Garcia-Rubio:

Fr. Ernesto Garcia-Rubio was ordained in 1963. He worked in Miami for one year and then moved to Cuba. In 1969, Garcia-Rubio was expelled in Cuba for “serious difficulties of a moral nature” and Miami took him back.

In 1988, Garcia-Rubio was accused of sexually abusing four Nicaraguan and Salvadoran refugee boys between 1983-1988.

According to media reports, Garcia-Rubio was evaluated at St. Luke’s in 1988. He was sent on sabbatical to Colombia and then assigned to Honduras.

Miami removed Garcia-Rubio’s faculties in 1989 and he was laicized in 1999.

In 2004, a fifth man alleged rape by Garcia-Rubio when he was 13 years old. The abuse took place in 1984 when he was a refugee.

As of 2004, some claims were settled. There were new suits filed in 2010 and 2013. There are at least 11 known victims.

According to the FL Attorney General’s report in 2020, Garcia-Rubio was known to befriend and offer help to teenage boys, mostly immigrants, withholding help if they would not provide him with sexual favors.

Very little is known of Garcia-Rubio’s activities within the church as the Archdiocese of Miami has not released all of information about Garcia-Rubio’s assignment history. Garcia-Rubio is deceased however the year he died is unknown.
