Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father James Devita:
In 2021, James Devita's name was listed on the Diocese of Rockville Centre List of Clergy Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor, which was prepared in conjunction with the Diocese's filing for bankruptcy protection. According to the Rockville Centre Diocese, names of accused priests were included in two instances: (1) following a determination by the Diocese's internal Review Board that the allegation against the priest is credible, and/or (2) if a claim was filed and a settlement paid by the Diocese's independent settlement fund. According to the list, the alleged sexual abuse occurred in multiple locations while Devita served at St. Rocco in Glen Cove, NY including at the parish, in Devita's car, at a Catholic retreat, at Devita's family member's house and at a private home in Long Island. DeVita died on September 21, 2022 at age 92. It is believed that he last resided in Boynton Beach, Florida.
