Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. L. Michael Herpin:

Fr. Michael Herpin was ordained a priest in 1966, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Lafayette, as a pastor at Sacred Heart of Jesus and vicar for the Diocese of Lafayette’s central region. According to media reports, in 2002, he announced that he had engaged “in sexual impropriety with a minor about 30 years ago.” Following the admission, he was removed  from ministry and his diocesan assignments. The diocese stated that it had notified “proper civil authorities,” though it refused to provide any details regarding where or when the incident occurred.

In April of 2019, Fr. Herpin was publicly named on the Diocese of Lafayette’s disclosure list of “priests against whom credible allegations have been made regarding sexual abuse of a minor or vulnerable adult.” Information about the date, age/gender of his alleged victim/victims and the nature of the alleged sexual abuse was not provided by the Diocese of Lafayette.

Michael Herpin a/k/a Lawrence Herpin died on August 8, 2024 at age 73.
