Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Br. Stephen DeMatteis:

Br. Donald Alford, a native of Brooklyn, NY, was a member of the Order of Friars Minor, who served in the Diocese of Norwich. According to media reports, in 1994, a civil suit was filed against Fr. Thomas Doyle, the Marianist Society, and the Diocese of Norwich on behalf of two brothers who allege that they were sexually abused for several years by Fr. Thomas Doyle beginning in 1977. Br. Stephen DeMatteis is named as a defendant.

According to the suit, the plaintiffs informed Br. Stephen DeMatteis about the alleged abuse during a Marianist retreat in New Jersey in July of 1983. Both Br. DeMatteis and another defendant failed to report the abuse, which is required by law. DeMatteis is also accused of making a “sexual advance” towards one of the brothers during the retreat.

The details of his assignment history and current whereabouts are unknown.
