Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Charles Dekeukelare

In 1982, Fr. Charles Dekeukelare was prosecuted for indecent behavior with a minor in Avoyelles Parish. Fr. Dekeukelare pleaded guilty and was removed from public ministry that same year. The Diocese of Alexandria included the incident in its 2019 list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse against a minor. After reviewing the evidence in Fr. Dekeukelare’s file, the Permanent Review Board—which determines the credibility of allegations of sex abuse brought against clerical members—found the allegation to be credible in 2019. However, additional details about the nature of the abuse are publicly unavailable.

According to sources, Fr. Charles Dekeukelare was ordained in 1948. In 1955, he was assigned to Our Lady of Lourdes and served as pastor until his resignation and subsequent conviction in 1982. It is unclear if, or for how long, Fr. Dekeukelare was imprisoned. After 1982, his whereabouts appear to be unknown.
