Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. James Liberty:
Fr. James Liberty was ordained an Oblate priest in 1957, who served in the Diocese of Norwich as an inspirational preacher and a marriage and family counselor for the Department of Catholic Family Services. According to media reports, in 2002, the bishop of the Diocese of Norwich apologized in a letter to a former Hampton resident for the suffering she allegedly endured when she was 18 in the 1980s. The bishop forwarded her complaint to the proper authorities.
There is no record of any alleged misconduct in the priest’s personnel file. Liberty’s name was not included in the Diocese of Norwich’s 2019 list of clergy credibly accused with allegations of the substance of sexual abuse of a minor.
He died in 1995.
