Summary of Abuse Allegation against Father Robert Ritchie:

According to media reports, in August of 2021, a civil lawsuit was filed naming Msgr. Robert Ritchie alleging that he sexually abused a minor about 50 years ago on one occasion. Richie announced this allegation against him in a letter to cathedral parishioners at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, denying the allegation.

In 2020, the New York state’s Child Victims Act went into effect in which this lawsuit was filed under. Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed into law a bill to extend the deadline for filing suits under the law to August 14. The law lifted the statute of limitations on abuse cases to allow victims to file claims regardless of when or how long ago the alleged abuse occurred.
