Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Jamie Medina-Cruz

In March 2013, the Diocese of Alexandria placed Fr. Jamie Medina-Cruz on administrative leave after he was accused of sexual misconduct with a minor at a church fair earlier in the month. While the Diocese of Alexandria did not publicly name Fr. Medina-Cruz on its list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor, the case was sent to a grand jury in late May 2013.

According to reports, the grand jury determined the evidence was sufficient to send the case to trial. Fr. Medina-Cruz was subsequently arrested and charged formally. No further details about the nature of the misconduct are available, as grand jury trials are not accessible to the public.

News reports say that approximately two weeks after the grand jury trial, Fr. Jamie Medina-Cruz was found dead in a hotel room with a rosary in his hand. Law enforcement said they suspected no foul play, but they would continue to investigate.

Ordained May 29, 1999, Fr. Jamie Medina-Cruz spent about 14 years in public ministry before his removal. Fr. Medina-Cruz died June 7, 2013.
