Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. John Crozier:

Fr. John Crozier was ordained a priest in 1949, who served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Portland. According to documents released by the Maine Attorney General’s Office in 2005, allegations of child sexual abuse in the 1960’s and 1970’s against Fr. John Crozier were reported to the Diocese of Portland in the mid 1990’s. The alleged victims were from one family: three brothers and their sister. The priest was close with the family, and the victim’s mother regarded him as a “kindly grandfather.”

The sister alleged that Fr. Crozier sexually abused her at the rectory where she worked. Crozier told her that if she did what he asked, he would not abuse her younger brother. The middle brother alleged that Fr. Crozier repeatedly sexually abused him for six or seven years beginning in 1967, when he was 6 or 7 years old until he was 13. The alleged abuse occurred at the rectory and at Crozier’s camp. The victim believed that his brother was also abused at Crozier’s camp because Crozier would lock them in different rooms.

The oldest brother alleged that Crozier abused him for four years beginning in 1962 or 1963 when he was 14 or 15 years old. The abuse occurred in the rectory and at Crozier’s camp. The alleged victim claims that Fr. Crozier would get him drunk before assaulting him. The youngest brother alleged that Crozier began abusing him in 1978 when he was 6 years old after he broke his arm. The alleged abuse involved fondling and bathing. The alleged victim also claimed that he brought other boys to meet Fr. Crozier and wondered if they were abused.

According to media reports, Fr. Crozier never had an assignment in the Diocese of Portland after 1983. He moved to the Virgin Islands and returned to Maine in 1988 where he lived at the Mount Joseph Home in Waterville until his death in 1990.
