Summary of the Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Nino Viviano

In June 2019, the Diocese of Alexandria added Fr. Nino Viviano’s name to its list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. After publishing the list in February, the diocese learned Fr. Viviano allegedly abused a female minor in the early 1960s.

The Permanent Review Board, which evaluates all allegations of clerical sexual misconduct involving minors, investigated the allegation and determined it was credible. According to the Diocese of Alexandria, when the investigation began, Fr. Viviano “was suffering from the advanced stages of dementia and was not capable of participating in the review” of the allegation. Further details about the nature and scope of the abuse are not publicly available.

Ordained May 30, 1964, Fr. Nino Viviano served for approximately 34 years before his retirement in 1998. Sources say Fr. Viviano also served as chaplain at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and as parochial vicar at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Clearwater. After his retirement, the diocese stated they did not extend facilities for ministry to Fr. Viviano.

Fr. Nino Viviano died on February 27, 2020. Right before his death, Fr. Viviano was reportedly living in a nursing home. Further details about Fr. Viviano’s whereabouts after his retirement are unknown.
