Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Monsignor Robert Friend

In February 2019, the Diocese of Alexandria publicly named Msgr. Robert Friend on its list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. According to the list, Msgr. Friend’s file revealed an allegation of misconduct and abuse of a male minor in 1954.

The Permanent Review Board, which evaluates allegations of sexual abuse brought against clerical members, reviewed the evidence in Msgr. Friend’s file in 2004 and determined the allegations were credible. The victim received a settlement in 2005. Further details about the nature of the abuse and the size of the settlement are not publicly known at this time.

Ordained June 25, 1925, Msgr. Robert Friend was named a monsignor in May 1972. According to news reports, Msgr. Friend retired in 1977 and died a few months later in October.
