In 2019, the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux publicly named Fr. Lawrence Cavell on its list of priests who admitted to, or were convicted of, sexual misconduct with children. According to the list, Fr. Cavell admitted to soliciting a minor.
According to sources, the incident occurred in the late 1980s, 15 years before his ordination. Diocese officials reported that the abuse involved a single act of sexually inappropriate words, not acts.
