Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Michael L. Barber
Father Michael L. Barber was a Jesuit priest who worked in multiple parishes in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Maryland and the Diocese of Washington DC. In 2019, Fr. Barber was listed on the Archdiocese of Baltimore's Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors list. In April 2023, Maryland's Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Fr. Barber.
According to media reports, in 1994, Father Barber pleaded guilty to a charge of harassment by offensive touching as part of a single allegation of sexual abuse in Strathmere, NJ. The complete history has not been disclosed.
Father Barber was removed from ministry that same year and relocated to the Colombiere Jesuit Community in Baltimore, located within a one-mile radius of four primary schools. Per the Jesuits, he is "living in a restricted environment on a safety plan." At the time of the incident, he was assigned to Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
In December 2018, Father Barber was named publicly as accused on the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus list of Jesuits with credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors since 1950. In February 2019, Father Barber's name appeared on the Archdiocese of Baltimore's list of credibly accused priests.
