Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Brother George Gardiner

Brother (Barton) George Gardiner was a a member of the Brothers of St. Francis Xavier and worked in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and in Brooklyn, NY. In 2019, Gardiner was listed on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors list. In April 2023, Maryland’s Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Brother Gardiner.

According to media reports, in 2019, the Xaverian Brothers reported that in 2013 they received an allegation that Brother Barton Gardiner sexually abused a child in the mid-1960 at a summer camp in Maryland. Gardiner withdrew from the order in 1970. In 2019, Gardiner’s name appeared publicly on the Xaverian Brothers’ list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors. His current whereabouts and whether he has access to children are unknown.
