Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Brother Thomas Tomasunas
Br. Thomas Tomasunas joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in 1955 and worked in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Maryland and in Pennsylvania. In April 2023, Maryland’s Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Br. Tomasunas.
According to the Attorney General’s Report, in 2008, a man reported that he was sexually abused by Br. Tomasunas in 1959 when he was 12 or 13 years old and an altar boy at Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Cumberland, MD. While an altar boy, the victim was in disciplinary trouble, and Br. Tomasunas began to repeatedly abuse him sexually at the church, the monastery, and in the garden.
The Archdiocese entered into a settlement agreement with the victim in 2004. Br. Tomasunas’ name does not appear on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s list of priests credibly accused of sexual misconduct with minors.
Br. Tomasunas died in 2001.
