Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Edmund Stroup

Father Edmund Stroup was a Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Maryland. In 2002, Fr. Stroup was listed on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors list. In April 2023, Maryland’s Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Father Edmund Stroup.

According to the AG’s report, in 1975, a woman reported that her son was physically assaulted by Fr. Stroup. The victim was attacked by Stroup in Ocean City, Maryland, while he was 16 years old. Fr. Stroup took a temporary leave from ministry and joined Alcoholics Anonymous.

Fr. Stroup was arrested in 1981 in Cape May, NJ, for sexual misconduct with a minor. The victim was from Maryland, where the abuse occurred. Following his arrest, Fr. Stroup was sent to residential treatment, then restored to ministry until his retirement.

In 1992, Fr. Stroup was accused of sexually abusing a young boy in the 1960s. Fr. Stroup took the victim on a trip to Florida, where he sexually assaulted the victim, according to the report.

According to the report, in 2002, multiple men reported sexual abuse by Fr. Stroup.  One man reported having been sexually abused by Fr. Stroup in 1976 or 1977 when the victim was 7 or 8 years old. That same year, yet another man came forward, stating he was sexually abused by Fr. Stroup in 1968 or 1969 when the victim was 16 or 17 years old. A third victim reported having been abused by Fr. Stroup in the rectory of St. Vincent DePaul Parish in Baltimore, where Fr. Stroup was assigned from 1961 to 1973, according to the report.

According to the report, in 2012, a man reported having been sexually abused by Fr. Stroup in approximately 1977, when the victim was about 13 years old. Fr. Stroup recruited the victim to help Fr. Stroup move into the rectory at Holy Family Catholic Church, where he then sexually abused him.

In 2013, a man reported being sexually abused by Fr. Stroup in the 1970s when the victim was 11 or 12 years old. Fr. Stroup met the victim in private at St. Rita’s Church in Dundalk, where Fr. Stroup then sexually abused him, according to the Attorney General’s report.

Fr. Stroup died in 2001.
