Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Brother Marius (John) Francis Shine:

Br. Marius Francis Shine, also known as Brother John F. Wilson-Shine, was a member of the Brothers of St Francis Xavier and worked in multiple parishes in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Maryland. In April 2023, Maryland’s Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Brother Shine.

According to the Attorney General’s report, in 2002, a man reported to the Archdiocese of Baltimore that his father had been physically and sexually abused by Fr. Shine when he was a boy in approximately 1947 or 1948 at St. Mary’s Industrial School. The victim was sent to live in the school’s dorm by his parent, where he shared a room with the youngest boys, overseen by Br. Shine. The victim confirmed the abuse and recalled that Br. Shine took a different boy into his own room every night. The victim claims that on one night, Br. Shine took the victim into his room, where he sexually abused the victim. When the victim attempted to resist, Br. Shine used his belt to abuse him physically. The victim ran away from the school repeatedly, being returned each time.

In 2019, Br. Shine’s name appeared on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors list and also on the Xaverian Brothers’ list of brothers credibly accused of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Brother Shine died in 1974.
