Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Fr. Robert V. Newman

Fr. Robert Newman was one of the 156 priests identified by the Maryland Attorney General as having been accused of sexually abusing minors during their tenure with the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

 

According to the Attorney General’s report, in 1987, Fr. Newman disclosed to Archdiocesan officials having committed numerous acts of child sexual abuse between 1971 and 1986. Archdiocesan records include 12 victims, all boys between the ages of 9 and 15 years old.

 

According to the Attorney General’s report, the first victim reported by Fr. Newman was abused by Fr. Newman on approximately 4 occasions between 1971 and 1972. The victim was 12 years old at the time of the abuse, and Fr. Newman sexually abused the victim in the victim’s home.

 

According to the report, the second victim reported by Fr. Newman was 11 years old at the time of the abuse. Fr. Newman sexually abused the victim on approximately 4 occasions at Fr. Newman’s apartment in 1973.

 

The third victim reported by Fr. Newman was 14 years old at the time of the abuse. Fr. Newman sexually abused the victim on approximately 4 occasions at his apartment in 1973, according to the report.

 

The fourth victim reported by Fr. Newman was abused by Fr. Newman in 1974 and was 12 years old at the time of the abuse. Fr. Newman abused the victim on approximately 3 occasions, according to the report.

 

The fifth victim identified by Fr. Newman was abused by Fr. Newman on approximately 20 occasions between 1973 and 1976, beginning when the victim was 9 years old. The abuse occurred at Fr. Newman’s home, according to the report.

 

The sixth victim identified by Fr. Newman was abused at a camp in 1982, when the victim was 13 years old, according to the report.

 

Fr. Newman’s seventh victim identified was sexually abused by Fr. Newman between 1981 and 1982 at Fr. Newman’s home, beginning when the victim was 10 years old, according to the report.

 

The eighth victim Fr. Newman identified was abused by Fr. Newman in 1982 at Fr. Newman’s home, when the victim was 10 years old, according to the report.

 

A ninth victim was sexually abused by Fr. Newman between 1982 and 1986 on approximately 6 occasions, according to the report.

 

A tenth victim was sexually abused by Fr. Newman on approximately 10 occasions at Fr. Newman’s house. The victim was abused between 1984 and 1986, beginning when the victim was 9 years old, according to the report.

 

An eleventh victim was abused by Fr. Newman in 1985 at Fr. Newman’s home. The victim was 15 years old at the time of the abuse, according to the report.

 

A twelfth victim was abused by Fr. Newman in 1985, when the victim was 15 years old. The abuse occurred at Fr. Newman’s house, according to the report.

 

According to Fr. Newman, none of the twelve victims had any affiliation with the church, but instead were Fr. Newman’s neighbors and people he had known for years.

 

According to media reports, following his admission of sexually abusing minors, Fr. Newman resigned and his faculties were removed. Fr. Newman entered a program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and eventually entered a treatment program at the Institute of Living in Hartford. Following his treatment at the Institute of Living, Fr. Newman returned to active ministry in 1990 within the Archdiocese of Hartford, before being removed from ministry again in 2002.

 

 Fr. Newman’s name appears on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s list of priests credibly accused of sexual misconduct with a minor.
