On June 19, 2025, Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Criminal Justice announced that a Middlesex County, New Jersey, doctor has been indicted on multiple charges of sexual assault, criminal sexual contact, and record tampering. Dr. Gurvindra Johal, a 57-year-old physician from Colonia, New Jersey, has been formally charged with two counts of sexual assault (second degree), 11 counts of criminal sexual contact (fourth degree), and one count each of falsifying or tampering with records and destruction, falsification, or alteration of records related to medical care (both fourth degree).
According to media reports, investigators allege that Johal, while acting as a medical professional, engaged in unlawful sexual conduct with patients during at least five consultations at urgent care facilities in Middlesex, Monmouth, and Essex counties. Furthermore, Johal is accused of modifying or destroying medical records, potentially to conceal his actions or misrepresent the medical care he provided. Johal was indicted by a State grand jury after the Division of Criminal Justice consolidated the cases.
The charges arise from a thorough investigation conducted by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office in cooperation with local law enforcement. Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of patients affected or the specific time frame during which the alleged incidents occurred. However, prosecutors stress the seriousness of the charges and urge any additional potential victims or witnesses to come forward as the investigation progresses. According to Johal's LinkedIn profile, he has been the medical director at Medison, a nationally certified Urgent Care company, for over 20 years.
“As Attorney General I have focused on supporting victims of violent crimes and ensuring fair and full investigation and prosecution of alleged offenders,” said Attorney General Platkin. “Medical patients need to be able to trust that they will be treated with respect, care, and professionalism when they seek treatment. For a doctor to allegedly prey upon patients is something we will not tolerate.”
The alleged assaults occurred while Johal was working at urgent care clinics in Perth Amboy, Newark, and Freehold Township.
Johal's Medical License Suspended in 2023
According to the Middlesex County, NJ, Office of the County Prosecutor, Johal was previously arrested and charged with two counts of Criminal Sexual Contact on February 25, 2023, and was later charged with two additional counts of Criminal Sexual Contact and one count of Sexual Assault in March 2023. The investigation into Dr. Johal's misconduct started after a patient reported inappropriate touching at Amboy Urgent Care in Perth Amboy, NJ. Further inquiries uncovered additional victims of sexual abuse, including others at the same facility, as well as at locations in Newark, NJ, and Freehold Township. Allegedly, five incidents occurred in Middlesex County, three in Essex County, and two victims were assaulted in Monmouth County.

According to a New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners Interim Consent Order in March 2023, Johal was terminated from his employment at CityMD Urgent Care in Newark following an investigation into two complaints alleging that he engaged in sexual misconduct with two patients. In the consent order, the board suspended Dr. Johal’s medical license. Although Johal did not admit wrongdoing, the Board found that his continued practice posed a threat to public health, safety, and welfare and prohibited him from treating patients.
Besides losing his license in New Jersey, Dr. Johal was also suspended from practicing medicine in New York. In April 2023, the New York State Board for Professional Medical Conduct finalized an Interim Order of Conditions against Johal, preventing him from practicing in the state while misconduct proceedings were pending.
Johal Allegedly Altered Medical Records
In addition to being accused of sexual crimes, Johal is also charged with trying to cover up his misconduct. He allegedly misled an insurance company by submitting a false statement in a letter during its investigation into claims of inappropriate touching. Furthermore, he reportedly altered medical records to falsely indicate that a medical assistant was present during an exam. His office manager, Rani Patel, 32, has also been charged with multiple crimes, including insurance fraud, for allegedly conspiring with him to send the misleading letter.
