Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Br. Dave Brueschere:
In August of 2005, half a dozen men filed lawsuits alleging they were sexually molested, beaten and frequently humiliated almost 40 years prior by nuns, priests and civilian staff members. All of the alleged abuse was said to have occurred at Madonna Manor, a Catholic home for troubled children in Marrero.
The lawsuits are all based on plaintiffs' experiences between the ages of 4 and 14-years-old. According to the archdiocese's spokesman, they began poring over old records to reach its own assessment of the conditions at Madonna Manor during the 1960's, when most of the allegations are clustered. One claim included a $5.2 million settlement with the Archdiocese of New Orleans in Fall of 2009.
One of the several defendants named in the lawsuits was Brother Dave Brueschere. No other information was released about the specific allegations against him or the number of victims who have come forward. No information has been released about Brother Dave Brueschere and his current status within the church. Whether or not he is still living is also unknown.
In April of 2020, the Archdiocese of New Orleans filed for bankruptcy protection. As part of its bankruptcy, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be reviewing and paying claims for anyone sexually abused by diocesan priests and lay employees. This will likely include claims filed on behalf of anyone whose case may be beyond the statute of limitations.
