Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Brother John Moriarty:
Br. John Moriarty, a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, joined Midwest District of the DeLaSalle Christian Brothers in 1951. He served in multiple dioceses including in the Diocese of Santa Rosa. According to media reports, he was accused in a 2003 lawsuit of sexually abusing a 17-year-old boy from 1975-1976 while serving at St. Helena retreat house. The boy was a De La Salle senior whose mother had just died when Moriarty first molested him, The case was settled for $1.2M, and it was reported a year later that Br. Moriarty was living at Wounded Brothers Project, an independent treatment center for troubled clergy members.
Br. Moriarty's name was included on the Diocese of Santa Rosa's 2019 list of clergy credibly accused of childhood sexual abuse.
Br. Moriarty died in 2013.
