About Edgar Lazaro Castillo
Media reports identify Castillo as having coached at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Xavier High School in Manhattan, and as having served as a longtime coach with Impact Volleyball Club. Legacy Volleyball Club reportedly dismissed him in 2014 after earlier complaints. That coverage also notes that one player filed a complaint alleging an assault at a tournament in Boston in March, and that agents contacted Impact players to offer counseling and provided parents with agents’ contact information.
Impact on Youth Sports Community
The allegations have raised concerns within youth sports leagues and organizations in New York City.
Coaches in youth athletics occupy positions of significant trust, often working closely with minors in training, travel, and competition settings. Allegations of misconduct in these environments raise serious concerns about:
- The safety of young athletes
- Oversight and supervision within youth sports programs
- How organizations respond to warning signs or complaints
Positions of Trust and Authority
Coaches and mentors play an important role in the development of young athletes. Parents and families trust that those in leadership positions will prioritize the safety and well-being of children.
Any attempt to exploit that position of trust for personal or sexual purposes is a serious violation of that responsibility and can have lasting consequences for victims.
