Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father James Toulas

Father James Toulas was a priest of the Redemptorist religious order who worked in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Maryland and in Brazil. In 2002, Fr. Toulas was listed on the Archdiocese of Baltimore's Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors list. In April 2023, Maryland's Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Father Toulas.

According to the AG's report, in 1993, a victim reported having been sexually abused by Fr. Toulas multiple times in 1969 or 1970, when the victim was approximately 14 years old. The boy told a janitor who told a priest about the abuse that occurred at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Baltimore. The report says that on one occasion, Fr. Toulas drove the victim to his high school and sexually abused him during the ride. Fr. Toulas was at this time working in Brazil but in Baltimore for vacation.

According to the report, Fr. Toulas was sent to St. Luke Institute for a psychological evaluation and treatment. Fr. Toulas was removed from ministry in 1993. The report states that Fr. Toulas admitted to the abuse in 1994 and possibly to abusing another altar boy at the same time.

Fr. Toulas died in 2000.
