Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Daniel McCallion
Father Daniel McCallion is a priest affiliated with the Legionaries of Christ, a Roman Catholic religious order. He was named in a federal lawsuit filed in 2021 involving allegations of sexual abuse at Immaculate Conception Academy, a private Catholic boarding school for girls in Greenville, Rhode Island.
Although McCallion was not a diocesan priest of the Diocese of Providence, the allegations involve a Catholic institution in Rhode Island. He is one of several Catholic clergy members connected to Rhode Island clergy sexual abuse lawsuits.
According to court records and BishopAccountability.org, McCallion was accused in a federal lawsuit filed in April 2021 of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in the 1990s while she was a student at Immaculate Conception Academy in Greenville, Rhode Island. The lawsuit alleged that the abuse occurred during confession.
Lawsuit Against Father Daniel McCallion and the Legionaries of Christ
In April 2021, a woman identified as Jane Doe filed a federal lawsuit alleging that she was sexually abused by Father Daniel McCallion while she was a student at Immaculate Conception Academy in Greenville, Rhode Island. According to the court’s memorandum of decision, Immaculate Conception Academy was a private Roman Catholic boarding school for girls of high school age and was operated by the Legion of Christ through Regnum Christi.
The lawsuit alleged that the plaintiff began attending the school in 1995, when she was 13 years old. According to the court’s summary of the allegations, the plaintiff was required to attend confession with McCallion at night, alone in the chapel. She alleged that McCallion removed the curtain between them, stared at her, exposed himself, exchanged notes with her, and summoned her to his office, where he stared at her in silence.
The lawsuit further alleged that Legion of Christ, Inc. knew McCallion was unfit to work with minors and nevertheless allowed him access to students. The plaintiff alleged that she suffered serious and continuing psychological and emotional injuries.
In February 2022, the court granted Legion of Christ, Inc.’s motion to dismiss two claims: recklessness and breach of fiduciary duty. The court allowed the case to continue on other claims, including negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and breach of the special duty of care.
Other Lawsuits Against the Legionaries of Christ
According to BishopAccountability.org, McCallion was one of several Legionaries of Christ priests or members named in lawsuits filed in 2021 involving allegations of sexual abuse at schools operated by the order.
Most of the lawsuits involved allegations of abuse at Immaculate Conception Apostolic School in Center Harbor, New Hampshire. One lawsuit involved a female student at Immaculate Conception Academy in Rhode Island.
The lawsuit alleged that Legionaries of Christ officials knew about abuse within the order and failed to stop it. According to the same report, McCallion had not previously been publicly identified by the Legionaries of Christ as an alleged abuser.
He does not appear to be included on the Diocese of Providence list of clergy who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. He also does not appear to be listed in Appendix A of the Rhode Island Attorney General’s 2026 report on child sexual abuse in the Diocese of Providence. However, he was publicly named in a federal lawsuit involving alleged sexual abuse at Immaculate Conception Academy in Greenville, Rhode Island.
