Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Sister Bridgette:
According to media reports, in 2003, a woman filed a lawsuit against the Diocese of San Diego, University High School and the Nazareth House Orphanage, alleging that Sister Bridgette abused her as a child from 1971 to 1972. The plaintiff was brought to the orphanage by her widowed mother, who could no longer support the family. During the four years the girl lived there, she was allegedly sexually abused, beaten and tortured by the nun. The lawsuit described a windowless room known as "solitary confinement," where the victim and other children were sent if they were found guilty of any wrongdoing.
Msgr. Brent Eagan was also included in the lawsuit which alleged that he raped the girl in the summer of 1972. Rev. Robert Buchanan, who is no longer in the ministry, and Richard Gordon, whose whereabouts are unknown, were named in the lawsuit, as well. The claim was settled in 2004.
The complainant filed a suit again in 2006, when the Diocese of San Diego stopped paying for her therapy after only one year. This situation is common to many other victims who have received compensation through therapy.
