Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father George A. Stallings, Jr.:
According to media reports, in 1986, the Archdiocese of Washington received a signed letter from a parishioner who alleged that Father Stallings was having sex with a boy in her family. No action was taken because church officials were not able to substantiate it as anything other than hearsay.
In September 1989, an adult man alleged that Father George A. Stallings, Jr. sexually abused him when he was a 16-year old altar boy at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. The alleged victim said he and Father Stallings repeatedly had sexual relations in the church rectory for several months in 1977. He said the abused ended when he refused further advances, and he never reported it to authorities.
In the summer of 1989, Cardinal Hickey confronted Father Stallings with concerns about his lifestyle, including whether he had engaged in any homosexual behavior. Cardinal Hickey asked him to seek treatment at a church-owned facility specializing in treating pedophilia. Father Stallings refused and formed his own breakaway congregation as a Black Catholic church. In 1990, Father Stallings was excommunicated from the church, but claimed he left because of racism.
In April 1990, a second adult second man came forward alleging sexual abuse by Father Stallings when he was an altar boy at Our Lady Queen of Peace. The man said that he and Father Stallings continued a sexual relationship from 1976-1984, starting when he was 11 years old. He said Father Stallings "was a father-type figure to me. I looked up to him, being that he was a priest."
According to media reports, a priest who knew Father Stallings and the young man during the late 1970s confirmed the sexual relationship with the child. The young man "would spend nights at the St. Teresa's rectory" after Stallings moved there in 1976, the priest said.
In 2008, a third adult man filed a civil suit that claimed he was sexually abused as a teenager by Father Stallings at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church from 1976-1984. In October 2009, the case was settled out of court.
Father Stallings currently serves at the Imani Temple African-American Catholic Congregation that he founded in 1990.
