Act in a transparent manner

Put people above the church
A sexual abuse scandal will likely cause people to think negatively of the church. However, the only way to begin rebuilding the church's reputation is to admit what happened and make changes. Generally speaking, people are willing to give other people and institutions a second chance if real change is made to right the wrongs of the past. Trying to pretend that nothing is wrong also provides a potential abuser with a chance to harm others in the future.
