Sexual Abuse Allegations at Oratory Preparatory School

Union County, New Jersey

Founded: 1907

Location: Summit, New Jersey

Grades: 7 through 12

Oratory Preparatory School is a Roman Catholic college prep school for boys in 7th through 12th grades. It has an average annual enrollment of 350 students and 38 classroom teachers. The school was founded in 1907 as Carlton Academy, a boarding school educating grades 4 through 12. In 1964 , the school limited its focus on the older children and became a day school.

In February 2019, the Archdiocese of Newark released a list of priests who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse at some point in their career. Four priests on the list had ties to Summit, New Jersey. They were listed as working in schools, churches and hospitals. John Capparelli and Joseph DiPeri were two of the priests assigned to Oratory Prep and Arturo Crespo and Robert Gibney were at other assignments near the school campus.

Not long after the Archdiocese’s list was released, Capparelli was found shot to death in his Las Vegas home.

Gibney and DiPeri are also deceased.  Crespo is believed to be residing in the Tampa, Florida area.  He is 57 years old.
