Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Malachy McGinn:
Fr. Malachy McGinn was a member of the Salesian order in Ireland prior to ordination. He worked in the Dioceses of San Diego and San Bernardino. According to the Diocese of San Bernardino, he is accused of sexually abusing children in 1969 and 1981. According to media reports, in 2005, Palm Springs philanthropist Dolores Hope, wife of comedian Bob Hope, donated $1 million for a chapel at Xavier College Preparatory High School in McGinn’s honor.
In March 2007, McGinn’s name was included in the Diocese of San Diego’s list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors. In October 2010, as part of a settlement with survivors of clergy sexual abuse, the Diocese of San Diego released his personnel file. It revealed a 1993 accusation of a sexual relationship with a 21-year-old female at Our Lady of Solitude in Palm Springs in 1968. He was also included in the Diocese of San Bernardino’s list released in October 2018. It noted that the Diocese was aware in 2002 of alleged abuse in 1969 and 1981.
