Fr. Paul Angelicchio – Diocese of Syracuse

Father Paul Angelicchio

Ordained: 1977

Removed: 2016, 2019

Known Assignments in the Diocese of Syracuse:

  • St. John the Baptist (Rome, NY)
  • Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter (Syracuse, NY)
  • Holy Family (Syracuse, NY)
  • Our Lady of Lourdes (Syracuse, NY)
  • Chaplain, Syracuse Police Department

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Paul Angelicchio:

In 2016, the Diocese of Syracuse suspended Fr. Paul Angelicchio after he was accused of molesting a boy in the late 1980s.  The victim alleged that Angelicchio abused him in tandem with two other priests, Fr. James Quinn and Fr. Charles Eckermann.  Less than a month after his removal, the Diocese of Syracuse said the allegations against Angelicchio were unsubstantiated during an internal investigation and he was returned to ministry.

In 2019, a second man came forward and alleged that he too was sexually abused by Angelicchio in the 1980s.  This time, the man said that Angelicchio raped him multiple times from 1980 to 1981, when the victim was in fifth grade.  At the time of the abuse, Angelicchio was assigned to Our Lady of Lourdes in Syracuse.

Angelicchio was suspended from ministry due to the second allegation in November 2019.  He was returned to ministry after the Diocese again concluded, after an internal investigation, that it could not substantiate the claim.  Angelicchio was returned to ministry at St. John the Baptist in Rome in February 2020.

Both men have now filed lawsuits against the Diocese of Syracuse under the new Child Victims Act in New York State.

Horowitz Law is a law firm representing victims and survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic priests and other clergy in the Diocese of Syracuse in New York.  The Diocese of Syracuse filed for federal bankruptcy protection in June 2020.  Anyone sexually abused by a priest or employee of the Diocese of Syracuse may be entitled to file a claim against the Diocese in these bankruptcy proceedings, but very strict filing deadlines apply.  Most victims of abuse in the Diocese of Syracuse will never be able to take any legal action if they miss this bankruptcy filing deadline, so it is important that you contact us immediately to discuss your potential case.  Our lawyers have decades of experience representing survivors of clergy sexual abuse in New York and nationwide. We can help.
