Summary of Abuse Allegations against Brother Alphonsus Maher:
Brother Alphonsus Maher was a member of the Congregation of the Religious Brothers of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis. According to media reports, in 2019, he was named in two lawsuits, alleging that he sexually abused minor boys. According to the first suit, he sexually abused a boy in approximately 1974, while he served as principal of Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School, in Brooklyn, New York. The second alleged Brother Maher had sexually abused a boy in approximately 1978 to 1980 at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School.
“In April 2021 the official committee of abuse survivors in the Diocese’s bankruptcy identified Brother Maher as a person accused of abuse who has some connection to the Rockville Centre Diocese.” According to the committee, the people on this list, “…have been accused of committing sexual abuse. These people have served within the territorial limits of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. A religious order and/or diocese outside of the Diocese of Rockville Centre found sexual abuse accusations against these people to be credible or sexual abuse lawsuits have been filed against these people.”
