Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Brother William Mueller:

Br. William Mueller professed his vows as a priest of the Society of Mary in 1957 in the St. Louis Province. He worked in the Diocese of Pueblo, Missouri, and Texas teaching at schools owned and operated by the Society of Mary.

According to media reports, Br. Mueller has been named in 23 lawsuits against the Marianists and the Diocese of Pueblo in 2005 and 2006. The suits alleged that he drugged and sexually abused at least 40 students in the 1960s through the 1980s. In 1985, he reportedly was sent to a New Mexico center that treats pedophilia.

The lawsuits state that the Diocese knew of his behavior, but allowed him to continue teaching and did nothing to warn other schools where he subsequently taught. Two of the lawsuits say the alleged abuse occurred in 1968 on a 15-year-old and in 1969 on a 17-year old. In each case, Br. Mueller asked the boys to help him in science experiments, which he said were for his masters thesis in psychology. Both victims alleged they were assaulted twice after inhaling ether.

In January 2008, the 23 suits were settled for $4M from the Order and the Diocese. Another claim was settled in August 2010.

Br. Mueller’s name was included on the Marianists’ list of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse in June 2020. He is believed to be living in San Antonio, Texas.
