Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. Juan Alers:

Fr. Juan Alers was ordained for the Diocese of Arecibo in Puerto Rico in 1969. He taught at the Catholic University in Puerto Rico for fourteen years. When he came to the United States, his first assignment was for the Archdiocese of Atlanta where he served for one year as chaplain of the penitentiary in Atlanta. Fr. Alers was transferred to the Diocese of Lake Charles in 1987.

Fr. Alers was publicly named on the Diocese of Lake Charles 2019 list of credibly accused clergy. The list notes that allegations of child sexual abuse in 1980-1985 against Fr. Alers were received in 1997. According to the diocese, the alleged abuse occurred when Alers was serving in Puerto Rico, and there was more than one victim. Information about the age/gender of his alleged victim/victims and the nature of the alleged sexual abuse was not provided by the Diocese of Lake Charles.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta publicly named Fr. Alers on its list of credibly accused clergy in 2020 under the heading “religious order /other diocesan priests with credible allegations of child abuse outside of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.”

Fr. Juan Alers died in 2011.
