Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Cuthbert Sullivan
Father Cuthbert Sullivan was a Passionist priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Maryland and in New Jersey. In April 2023, Maryland’s Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Father Sullivan.
According to the AG’s report, in 2002, a victim reported that Cuthbert Sullivan, along with two other Passionist priests, Eugene Ambrose McGuire, and Benedict Mawn, sexually abused him at St. Joseph’s Monastery in Baltimore. The victim reported that McGuire abused him when he was eight years old, and Mawn and Sullivan fondled him in 1952 when he was 13 years old. The archdiocese made the mandatory report to authorities in 2002. However, Sullivan has not been listed as credibly accused by the archdiocese or the Passionists, while Mawn and McGuire are both listed as credibly accused. Fr. Sullivan died in 1999.
