On August 11, 2025, a Hinds County Grand Jury indicted Mehul Dixit, a 61-year-old former pediatric nephrologist and children’s kidney disease specialist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), on 25 felony counts related to alleged sexual misconduct with teenage patients. The charges include 13 counts of gratification of lust of a vulnerable person and 12 counts of sexual battery of a vulnerable person.
According to public records and media reports, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced the indictments, which stem from Dixit’s 2023 arrest in Hinds County. At the time of his arrest, Dixit faced two felony counts of sexual battery involving vulnerable patients.
Allegations from 2023 and 2013
In one 2023 incident, Dixit was accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old pediatric patient during a February physical examination at UMMC. The patient reported to law enforcement that Dixit touched her inappropriately with his finger.
A separate allegation involves a 13-year-old pediatric patient who reported that Dixit fondled her breasts and touched her inappropriately with an ungloved hand during a 2013 examination for kidney stones. Although the girl’s mother and a nurse were present in the exam room, they reportedly could not see Dixit’s hands. The incident was reported to UMMC in September 2013, according to the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure.
Following these allegations, a Hinds County judge set Dixit’s bond at $300,000 and prohibited him from having contact with anyone under 18 or with anyone employed by UMMC. His employment at UMMC was terminated.
License Suspension and Additional Complaints
After the accusations surfaced, court orders required Dixit to avoid contact with the alleged victims, wear an ankle monitor, and surrender his passport. The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure suspended his medical license. Board investigators determined that two teenage girls had accused Dixit of inappropriate touching with an ungloved hand during exams at UMMC.
The board also uncovered an earlier complaint from Florida in 2016 involving a 17-year-old patient who alleged sexual misconduct during a 2006 exam at Florida Hospital in Orlando. She reported that Dixit instructed her to undress and asked her mother to leave the room, then allegedly fondled her breasts and touched her vagina with an ungloved hand. No disciplinary action limiting Dixit’s access to minors was taken in 2016.
Dixit, who is board-certified in pediatric nephrology, previously practiced in Florida before relocating to Madison, Mississippi. His Mississippi medical license remains suspended pending the outcome of the criminal case.
