Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. Charles G. Coyle:
Father Charles Coyle was a member of the religious order called the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. In 2002, Father Coyle was officially sued for the alleged abuse of a boy in the 1970's at Newton High School in Boston. Reports were also made that a second youth was living with Charles Coyle at the time and later died by taking his own life. Coyle was working as a guidance and drug counselor at the time. Coyle was working in New Orleans when the accusations were first made public. The Archdiocese of New Orleans immediately placed him on leave.
A second lawsuit was filed against Charles Coyle in 2003 of alleged abuse dating to when Coyle was a seminarian in Baltimore. It was later omitted from the 2011 Boston AD database. No further information has been released about the alleged timeframe of the abuse or the number of victims who have come forward.
Charles Coyle died in July of 2015.
His name has been included on the New Orleans archdiocese's list in November of 2018 of credibly accused clergy members. He taught at the New Orleans' Jesuit High from 1958-1961 when he was a scholastic. He has also been included on the Maryland Province list as of December of 2018 and the Baltimore archdiocese's list as well.
In April of 2020, the Archdiocese of New Orleans filed for bankruptcy protection. As part of its bankruptcy, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be reviewing and paying claims for anyone sexually abused by diocesan priests and lay employees. This will likely include claims filed on behalf of anyone whose case may be beyond the statute of limitations.
