  • 1980-1987: St. Joseph (Paulina, LA)

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Timothy Sugrue:

Fr. Timothy Sugrue was a Marist priest that worked in the Diocese of Little Rock and Baton Rouge.

According to media reports, Fr. Sugrue was accused in a 1992 civil suit of abusing an 8-year-old girl and her sister in 1978 at the Air Force Base in Blytheville, Arkansas, before Sugrue moved south to Louisiana. Fr. Sugrue did not testify; took the Fifth Amendment in a deposition regarding involvement with children while working in Ohio, Georgia, Louisiana, Alaska, and the Philippines. Sugrue resigned from the Air Force in 1979 after there was an investigation into allegations. The trial in 1993 resulted in a $1.5 million judgment against Sugrue, not the Order. Sugrue had few assets and in 2003 and 2013, judges revived orders requiring that Sugrue pay the damages, court filings show.

Fr. Sugrue was dismissed from the priesthood in 2005.

In 2018, Sugrue was publicly named and included on the Diocese of Little Rock's list of credibly accused clergy for whom allegations of sexual abuse of a minor have been admitted, substantiated, or determined or considered to be credible. It notes one known victim.

In 2019, Sugrue was also named on the Diocese of Baton Rouge list without any credible allegations having been made against them related to that service, but have been publicly identified by other dioceses or institutes of consecrated life on reports similar to this list for reasons unrelated to the Diocese of Baton Rouge.

As of 2019, Sugrue was living in Florida.
