How can massage therapists handle inappropriate client behavior?

Massage therapists expect to provide their services in Florida without incident. However, Sometimes, clients can behave inappropriately. It's important to know how such a situation should be handled.

Stop the massage immediately and be firm

Immediately stop the massage and be firm with the client. Tell them that their behavior makes you uncomfortable and that it is inappropriate. You are not there to be sexually abused. Avoid using a passive voice when stressing your boundaries to them.

If you feel uncomfortable remaining in the room, leave and tell the client through the closed door that they should immediately leave the spa.

Describe the behavior

If the client appears to not understand you, explain the behavior you're noticing that's making you uncomfortable. Something sexual in nature may be awkward, but it's important to be direct and firm.

Ask the client their intentions

Directly ask the client what their intentions are with the appointment. If someone is acting sexually inappropriate, they might make a joke or avoid answering. You should get a clear response and respond by telling the client your intent for giving a massage.

Educate the client

In some cases, the client's body may automatically respond to touch during a massage. If someone is visibly aroused and expresses embarrassment, explain that it's a normal, physiological response to touch.

Continue or discontinue the session

Depending on the situation, you can continue or stop the session. If the client has behaved sexually inappropriately, the best option is to stop.

Document the situation

Always document any situation involving inappropriate sexual behavior by a client. If you ignore it, that client might return and cause a lot more harm. You can also help keep your colleagues safer by reporting any inappropriate behavior by clients to your supervisor.

Clients and massage therapists deserve to be treated with respect. If one party crosses the line, it could be considered criminal behavior.
